A couple of weeks ago, Jansen Langle returned from the better part of a year as an exchange student in Fort Wayne ’s sister city of Gera , Germany . He had the usual stories. He traveled to different countries in Europe with his host families and, to his surprise, learned that, even though, he had taken two years of German in high school, he was, for all practical purposes, unable to communicate in that language. He’d ask people questions and they’d say, “Es is mir wurst.” Langle would be stumped. Literally it means, “It is to me sausage.”
